Do I pick up the fly rod or the paint brush? The way I explore nature is by carrying both. I never know which way the day will turn. By immersing myself in the place I get a much better sense of it. I am not one to stop along the road and glance at the view from the overlook. I need to stand in the river. I need to feel the grass under my feet. I need to get off the road and hike. Only then do I feel like I have been there. With some photos, a sketch or painting, or some fish slime on my pants, I have experienced the place. Getting the feeling of the scene into my paintings is the ultimate goal. When a viewer of my work connects with it in a deeper way I know I have communicated it well.
